What is AVID at WHS?

AVID means "hungry for knowledge."
AVID is Advancement Via Individual Determination.
AVID is a commitment to success
through the AVID elective class and a 4-year program.
It's challenging, but it's also a source of confidence, motivation, and support from other students with a shared commitment to education and learning and a shared goal of attending a four-year college or university.

Activities include:
• small-group tutorial for all classes
• seminar discussion
• writing for college
• developing strategies for success in high school and in college
• school and community leadership
• college research and planning for scholarships and financial aid
• field trips to colleges and universities

The Senior Seminar guides seniors through the process of choosing the right college, college applications, and applying for financial aid to pay for college.

ELIGIBILITY and REQUIREMENTS :
AVID enrollment requires an application and an interview.
Candidates must demonstrate the ability and the desire to succeed in a 4-year college or university, as well as excellent attendance.
AVID welcomes students who will be the first in their family
to go to college, and students who are struggling to overcome
problems and obstacles (including language or income).

AVID STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES :
• Expect and strive for the best from yourself.
• Be open to new experiences in every part of the AVID program.
• Come to AVID, and to all of your classes, prepared to take Cornell notes, to think, and to learn.
• Commit to 2 hours of homework each night.
• Take a full schedule of challenging college-prep classes.
• Challenge yourself with extracurricular activities, including school and community service and leadership.
• Collaborate with others to improve your work and share your understanding.

If college is your goal
and you're looking for guidance
to help you get there,
AVID might be for you.
